PREL Launches New Magazine
Leading Education Group Unveils
A new regional magazine last month began reaching nearly 26,000 readers in the American-affiliated Pacific Islands and Hawaii. Pacific Educator is a quarterly publication of Pacific Resources For Education and Learning, better known as PREL.
The magazine is a major initiative of PREL Chief Executive Officer Dr. John W. Kofel. Pacific Educator is published in partnership with Pacific Magazine and its owner, Pacific Basin Communications.
Pacific Educator consolidates four PREL newsletters, which were published by separate programs within the organization. Dr. Kofel says the new magazine will help develop a stronger awareness of PREL in the Pacific Islands region that it serves.
The magazine reaches nearly 26,000 public and private school teachers, educational administrators, and regional governmental decision makers. A bit more than half of Pacific Educator’s readers are in Hawaii, with the remainder in American Samoa, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas. Key federal education officials also receive the magazine.
The inaugural issue of Pacific Educator focuses on “Professional Development.” Among the stories in the first issue: how teachers can better teach English as a second language; the impact of vision problems on student performance; how the “talk story” approach encourages student participation; PREL assistance for suicide prevention programs; training mathematics teachers; a new CD-ROM designed to help those who teach algebra; education resources on the Web; and, how teachers can get advanced training through distance learning programs.
Pacific Educator’s editorial team is headed by PREL Communications Director Nancy Lane; Managing Editor Joan Perkins; Assistant Editor Jennifer Harada; Editorial Assistant Laurie Burman; Graphics Coordinator Liane Sing; Dissemination Specialist Kelly Higashi; and, Contributing Editors Linda Chung and Patricia von Oelhoffen.
Pacific Educator’s inaugural issue is sponsored by the University of Hawaii Community Colleges and First Hawaiian Bank.
