Telecom Fraud Up for Discussion at PITA's AGM

More new members are expected to join

The Pacific Islands Telecommunications Association¹s (PITA) sixth annual general meeting on April 10-12 at the Outrigger Hotel, in Fiji, promises to be a convergence for telecommunications hot topics from around the Pacific Islands region.

Telco operators in the region are expected to present country papers based on an overview of operational status and future development plans.

PITA manager, Fred Christopher explains there will also be papers on telecom issues related to the region such as telecom fraud, call centres and Pacific Islands telecommunications benchmarks¹ "Best Practices."

There will be closed sessions to address specific needs in the region on the Federal Communications Commission's benchmarking, and a closed meeting reserved for regulators.

These sessions will allow free discussions on issues affecting specific members and formulate action plans. Other presentations include Fiji International Telecommunications Limited's follow-up proposal: "Pacific Islands fibre optic inter-island connectivity." The first proposal was presented during the PITA meeting in Honolulu earlier in the year during the Pacific Telecommunications Conference (PTC) 2002.

Presentations will also be heard from satellite/carrier companies Pacific. The Fiji School of Medicine will also provide an overview of its Tele-health project.

The annual general meeting will see the ratification of new members. Since the PTC 2002 annual conference, at which PITA holds a one-day meeting and workshop, PITA gained six additional members bringing the total membership to 64.

The meeting proper includes the election for two PITA executive committee members - vice president and an executive member - and deliberations on a work plan for 2002/2003.

Concurrent to the annual general meeting will be a trade exhibition and opportunities to conduct valuable bilaterals with fellow telco operators and telecommunications equipment and services suppliers.
