Whitney Named Editor of Pacific Magazine
New Editor Brings Broad Pacific Islands Experience To Magazine
PacificBasin Communications, publisher of Pacific Magazine, has named Scott Whitney as the magazine’s editor. This is a new position, based in Honolulu, Hawaii. Whitney is a veteran writer and editor who most recently was associate editor of Honolulu Magazine, another PacificBasin Communications monthly title.
Managing Editor Giff Johnson, who has led the publication’s editorial team since January 2001, will remain with Pacific Magazine as Contributing Editor. Johnson is based in Majuro, Marshall Islands. Johnson, who is also editor of the Marshall Islands Journal, was recently given a significantly expanded management role at the national newspaper. That new role has required him to cut back the time he can dedicate to Pacific Magazine.

“Scott’s appointment is a major boost for Pacific Magazine,” says Floyd K. Takeuchi, president of PacificBasin Communications. “His in-depth writing in Honolulu Magazine on the Bishop Museum and Native Hawaiian issues, among others, have had a huge impact in Hawaii. He will bring that same discerning eye, along with his knowledge of the Pacific Islands, to his new role as Editor of Pacific Magazine.”
Whitney, who worked as an educator in the Marshall Islands and as a grant writer in American Samoa, earned a M.A. in Pacific Islands Studies from the University of Hawaii-Manoa.
“We’re extremely pleased that Giff Johnson will remain with us as Contributing Editor,” adds Takeuchi. “Giff has spent 18 years as a journalist working from his base in the Marshall Islands. His experience and insight about the region played a key role this past year in our reshaping Pacific Magazine’s regional focus. Giff will continue to edit and write for the magazine, particularly his well-read column that serves as a regional reality check.”
