Letters to the Editor

Editor:
Thank you so much for choosing to highlight Vanuatu’s Anna Naupa in the latest Pacific North issue. Pacific Island students studying at the University of Hawai‘i are proud of her and would like to commend her for her efforts.

Anna, who initially came to study at UH under the East-West Center -administered South Pacific Islands Development Program Scholarship, was the recipient of the UH-Hilo Geographer Prize, for being the most outstanding graduate in that discipline for the Spring 2001 class. That is one of the major reasons UH offered her a graduate position post.

I believe that Anna may have omitted this information during your interview. This is not surprising and may be in line with Pacific Islanders’ tendency to downplay their achievements.

Thank you again for your wonderful coverage of Pacific Islanders doing well in Hawai‘i.

First of all I want to thank you for your article in Pacific Magazine.

Our phone is ringing; people are chatting us up; more smiles at the grocery store—all signs that your word is read. Just a few moments ago I was particularly moved by your insightful comments on globalization in your column in Pacific Magazine that also reports about the film.

Now, for the boo-boos in the article: Probably the most serious was that our cinematographer is Paul Atkins; not Mark Atkins. I see how you made the mistake though, since the photo credits belong to the film’s camera assistant, Mark Atkins, Paul’s nephew. The Web site for the USC film school is http://www.asianfilms.org.

Please know that Vili and I went to Borders last night and bought three copies of Pacific Magazine and read it from cover to cover. We felt it was so refreshing to read the profiles of the Pacific Islanders and see a real positive difference in attitude and style.
Sincerely,
Jeannette Paulson Hereniko
