February 10th dawned sunny and warm in American Samoa, perhaps auspicious since it is the rainy season. Good thing: the U.S. territory unveiled two major projects that day, a new high-tech library for the American Samoa Community College and its first KFC franchise.
The college’s new two-story library, funded in large part by the U.S. Dept. of the Interior and built by general contractor Fletcher Construction, provides 8,900 square feet of wired study space for the college and community. The contractor and subs were working until the last minute to prepare the building for its coming out party.

With the library in place, college President Dr. Adele Satele-Galeai, and Higher Education Board Chairman Pemerika Tauiliili can now move forward on plans to offer a four-year baccalaureate degree in teacher education in the near future. Gov. Tauese Dr. Pita Sunia reminded the hundreds of invited guests and students at the dedication that the library also reflected the policies of his predecessors, Governors Peter T. Coleman and A.P. Lutali.

Later that day, near the territory’s airport, the prominent Haleck family unveiled its latest investment. It is the first KFC franchise in American Samoa. The crowd at the KFC opening was even larger than at the college library dedication.

The KFC outlet breaks with franchise tradition by having much more space for families to sit down and enjoy meals. That was to meet American Samoan expectations of eating out being a family event, Vince Haleck told the crowd.
The draw of a free chicken meal and soda enticed many of the hundreds that attended the opening. They were comforted, no doubt, by the large KFC sign in front of the store. Under the KFC logo, the sign noted: “Tastes Like Chicken.”
