Twenty years ago Pacific Magazine carried the story of the completion of the six-story Ioane Viliamu Building, which became the tallest building in Samoa. Named for the papalagi Congregational missionary John Williams, the building owner and developer was the Congregational Christian Church of Samoa, which moved its headquarters to the fifth floor of the Viliamu. Writer Joseph Theroux interviewed Niue Premier Robert Rex, who told Theroux that he was happy with his country’s relationship with New Zealand. “We’re practically independent now,” Rex said. “We make our laws and pass them. I’m more than happy with the set up now.” Another fascinating history feature in this edition of PM was a look at Camp Susupe, Saipan’s post-war internment camp in which the U.S. military housed Chamorro, Carolinian, Korean and Japanese civilians. Almost 1,000 died of infections and malnutrition during the first months of the camp’s operations.
The cover photo by George Balazs shows "a Rarotongan woman at home in the Cook Islands."
