Enjoys North-South Connections What pleasantry opening up your online magazine (www.pacificislands.cc)
where regional coverage is provided, including important events north
and south of the equator. A monumental task made a bit more convenient
by technology. An excellent magazine! Hafa Adai! When Will FSM Eliminate Corruption? I am from Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia. Right now, I am a college student trying to make it in the States to get a bachelor's degree in politics. I have fought many obstacles trying to pursue my education (which I want to apply toward Pohnpei when I'm done) because I have high hopes and dreams that the FSM will be a great nation in the future and will outlive its edgy past of corruption and governmental abuse of power. But so far I have grown more weary of what the future might have for our people and for myself. Why is our government abusing the power we've bestowed upon it? I don't know exactly if they are blinded by these unjustifiable actions that are being done through our government, through the people who are supposed to represent our path to a stable future. I fear that it might be a fact now that nothing can be done to my beloved country of FSM to help it bloom into the beautiful nation it should be. I know we've always had problems in our government, but when are we going to outgrow this stage? We are now starting the second Compact of financial aid for our country and so far our government leaders have acted in the same manner they have before. Why is it that nothing is being done to stop this? How can I make a difference if our own president cannot? If our own leaders won't punish the thieves inside our own government, now what's to say the corruption won't stop? What can we do to have our voices be heard? Graham Henry Looking For WW II Veterans Veterans of the World War II battles of Saipan and Tinian are being invited to the commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the Battle for Saipan and Tinian to be held June 12-16, 2004 on the island of Saipan. Jessica Jordan No One Listening About Tafuna Prison I'm writing you about the incident that's being called a riot by officials at the Tafuna Correctional Facility in American Samoa. The name should sound familiar. Last year, an inmate was killed and two others were injured. Those were the only accurate facts printed in the Samoa News. The inmate the authorities are holding responsible is my brother. He was the prison cook. He is being tried and convicted in public opinion once again before he has a chance to state the facts about what happened. Junior was waiting to go before the parole board in March. He's been waiting since August 2003, the original date that was set. His life was being threatened daily by the other inmates, before the incident, one of many facts left out by the paper. This was bound to happen given the living conditions and prison politics the inmates are subjected to on a daily basis. No one is willing to help him nor cares to find out the truth. He served his time for his original conviction and was anticipating the chance to redeem himself as a father to his two young boys. No one was willing to listen before about the conditions in the prison and the justice system. I pray someone listens now. My brother's life is at stake. Adelita Hall |
