Palau Senate President Wants 20% Pay Cut Next Year

Presidential Candidate and President of Palau’s Senate Surangel Whipps has introduced a bill to reduce the pay for senators from the current $50,000 to $40,000 for the 8th OEK next year.

The bill has been referred to the Committee on Ways and Means and Financial Matters chaired by Floor Leader Alan Seid. Neither Whipps nor Seid are eligible to run for Congress next year due to the new law limiting terms, which takes effect in this year’s November general election.

Whipps says that the purpose of the bill is to contribute to the urgent need to cut cost of government without raising taxes and more effectively manage of the budget. He says a  20 percent reduction in salary would be an effective example for the Senate to set.
