Inquiry Team Clears Chaudhry

An inquiry team has cleared Fiji’s finance minister Mahendra Chaudhry of allegations of tax evasion.

The team, made up of Australian lawyer Bruce Cowley, former MP Taufa Vakatale and accountant Russel Postle have reported that tax assessments by FIRCA regarding Mahendra Chaudhry between 2000 and 2006 were carried out in accordance with the Tax Act and other relevant laws of Fiji reports Fijivillage.com.

Interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama is satisfied with the result of the three member inquiry team.

“The independent inquiry team has concluded that: one the tax assessment by FIRCA in respect of Chaudhry between 2000 and 2006 was carried out in accordance with the Tax Act, and other relevant laws in Fiji.

“Two - the committee has not identified any breaches of the Exchange Control Act by Chaudhry between the years 2000 to 2006.

“Let the Government make this very clear, this level of scrutiny and the fact that the finding into the facts details of a Government member or any citizen of our country has been made public is unprecedented,” Sayed-Khaiyum says.
