US Official Says Palau Is Pacific’s Best Run Country

The Director of the of the United States Office for Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific Islands Affairs, C. Steven McGann, says Palau is the best-run Pacific Island country.

McGann is heading the U.S. group for consultations regarding the upcoming review of the Compact of Free Association in 2009.

He told the Palau Horizon that initial meetings last week reaffirmed the on-going success of the Compact.

He added that the U.S. does not see the Compact negotiations under the context of more money for Palau but rather how the U.S. can contribute on areas to strengthen Palau’s ongoing development plans.

McGann added the US also expects the General Accountability Office (GAO) report on Palau’s management of Compact funds to be positive.
