Board Fires Guam Education Superintendent

(KUAM)

Guam Education Superintendent Luis Reyes was fired last night by the territory's education board, television station KUAM reports on its Web site.

Reyes has been under increasing pressure following the closure two weeks ago of Southern High School for widespread health and safety violations. The school was reopened last night, after the education board's Health and Safety Task Force conducted an inspection of the campus.

KUAM reports the education board acted last night in executive session. Chairman Joe San Agustin told KUAM that the Southern High School debacle only aggravated the board's concerns about Reyes' leadership of the public school system.

Reyes' contract was terminated, effective immediately, KUAM reports.
