Utilities Chief Resigns Amid Power Crisis

(Saipan Tribune)

The embattled chief of the Northern Marianas' Commonwealth Utilities Corporation has resigned, the Saipan Tribune reports.

Anthony C. Guerrero submitted his letter of resignation to Gov. Benigno Fitial. The governor  immediately appointed Antonio Muna, former special assistant for the Office of Management and Budget, as the new CUC executive director. Muna assumes his new duties tomorrow.

The newspaper says there has been speculation in recent weeks that Fitial would fire Guerrero. The CUC has been unable to offer stable power on Saipan, which has suffered through weeks of blackouts because of maintenance-related problems.

The troubled utility is also short of funds and has come close to running out of fuel to power its generators.
