Samoa Govt Could Control Water Ways Under New Legislation

(Radio New Zealand International)

A government bill under consideration in Samoa could strip villages of ownership of rivers and streams in their village boundary reports RNZI.

The management resource bill is now before a parliamentary committee for a final review and consideration.

Government MP, Tuiloma Lameko, says the bill would allow the government to operate the long overdue hydropower project in Savaii Island using water resources in the village of Sili.

Sili village rejected the hydro project last year and banned all government activities relating to the power plant on their land.
