Somare Battling Ombudsman Commission

(The National)

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare wants to stop an investigation into his alleged failure to lodge complete tax returns reports The National.

The Ombudsman’s Office is investigating the allegations.

Under PNG law, failure by leaders to give the Ombudsman’s Commission details of their total assets, income, and business connections, can see them referred to the Leadership Tribunal for prosecution for alleged misconduct in office.

Sir Michael’s lawyers say they will appear in court today to seek an interim injunction to stop the investigations while full arguments are heard to permanently stop the investigations into these allegations.
