Attacks On Foreigners Worries Fiji Tourism Officials

(Fiji Times)

Fiji's top tourism official says the country needs to do more to ensure the safety of visitors in the wake of two recent attacks, the Fiji Times reports.

Patrick Wong, chairman of the Fiji Visitors Bureau, was responding to the attempted kidnapping of the 5-year old son of an expatriate official at a picnic, where the party was also robbed. Also, an elderly Australian couple was robbed aboard their yacht, while it was berthed in Fiji.

"If the concerns for the increase in violent acts are not addressed it would change the image of Fiji being the safest destination. But Fiji is still one of the safest destinations although we have been bruised by these recent attacks on foreigners,” Wong said.

Interim Fiji Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama recently said Fiji was still a safe destination for tourists, despite the attack on the elderly couple.

"I must say how disturbed I was to have heard about what happened to Mr Brian and Jan Dodds of Brisbane on their cruise yacht to Fiji. But to single out that incident and use it as a weapon to attack our tourism industry is pointless and misleading,” Bainimarama said.
