News Media Must Be Regulated, Bainimarama Says
(
Interim Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says the country's news media must be regulated by others, the Fiji Times reports.
"We have to find a way of regulating the press instead of them regulating themselves. We don't want to gag the media, we don't want to stop media freedom.. e want that to continue but we want someone from outside to have a look at it instead of them the publishers and the editors,” Bainimarama was quoted as saying.
Bainimarama said he doesn't want to shut down news media operations, as happened after the first coups in 1987. But he said the country's news media tries to undermine his government. And he targeted the Fiji Times for particular criticism.
"Right now, I know that you do it intentionally to undermine the government. That's why I asked the Fiji Times editor when they came in, why they hate us so much, that they print things against the military and against the government. Why is the media so much against the interim government when we've done nothing but plan good for this country?" Bainimarama said.
