Fiji AG Concerned About Human Trafficking
(Fiji Times)
Trafficking in people is an issue in Fiji that needs attention, a top interim government official said in response to criticism of Fiji in a U.S. State Department’s report released last week, the Fiji Times reports.
Interim Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says human trafficking was a matter that should have been addressed sometime ago.
The State Department’s report on human trafficking said the political and economic crisis in Fiji following the 2006 coup and inadequate funding provided to police and the Immigration Department led to an intolerable state of trafficking in the country.
New legislation and policing mechanisms can help, said Sayed-Khaiyum.
"This obviously requires resources and there are a number of matters that need to be addressed in as far as priority is concerned by the government and this is one of them and we will get to it,” he said, adding that he welcomed assistance from other nations.
