Senator English Named APIL President

Hawaii State Sen. J. Kalani English has been elected president of the Association of Pacific Island Legislatures. English, the first Hawaii lawmaker to head the organization, will serve one year as president.

He steps into APIL's lead role after serving two terms as vice president. English assumes the APIL presidency on October 1, 2008.

"We are looking at a number of areas of mutual interest where regional cooperation, coordination, exchange and assistance can help our individual governments achieve important goals through collective action. I’m pleased that Hawai‘i will play a role in these efforts, and that I will have an opportunity to contribute to helping improve the lives of our Pacific Island neighbors,” English said in a statement.

APIL is a voluntary organization comprised of legislatures from American Samoa, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Marianas Commonwealth, Palau, Federated States of Micronesia (including state legislatures), Marshall Islands, Kiribati and Nauru. It also includes affiliated organizations the Pacific Islands Development Bank, Ayuda Foundation and Reach Out Pacific (REPAC).
