Three Hawaii-based U.S. Marines, including a lieutenant colonel originally from American Samoa, have been killed during a suicide bomber attack in Iraq, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reports, citing an Associated Press report.

Lt. Col. Max A. Galea'i, 42, of Pago Pago, American Samoa, was killed along with Capt. Philip J. Dykeman of New York, and Cpl. Marcus W. Pruedhomme of Florida. The Marines were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division, based at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Twenty Iraqis also died in the attack.

The U.S. military said today that a member of an extremist cell believed to be behind the attack was arrested, the newspaper reported.

A suicide bomber reportedly dressed in a police uniform detonated an explosive belt during a meeting of tribal sheiks opposed to al-Qaida in Iraq. In addition to the Marines, two Iraqi interpreters, the local mayor and several key tribal figures were killed, the Star-Bulletin reported.
