U.S. Ambassador Tells Islanders To Look To Guam For Jobs

(Radio Australia)

The outgoing U.S. ambassador to Fiji says the U.S. military buildup on Guam will mean jobs for Pacific Islanders, Radio Australia reports.

Ambassador Larry Dinger says if islanders have sufficient skills and the costs are competitive, there will be jobs for them on Guam.

The island is preparing to kick off in 2010 a 10-year, $15 billion buildup of U.S. military facilities. At the center of the buildup is the relocation of some 9,000 U.S. Marines and their family members from Okinawa to Guam.

Dinger, who previously served as U.S. ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia, says the buildup is so huge that Guam's resident labor force cannot meet the demand for skilled workers.
