Solomons Power Utility Mum As Honiara Goes Dark For A Day

(Solomon Star)

Honiara faces uncertainty because of Solomon Islands Electricity Authority’s (SIEA) fuel crisis. The authority reportedly has a huge outstanding bill with its local fuel supplier Markwarth Oil, which is refusing to provide further supplies until outstanding debts are cleared.

The situation resulted in Honiara going without power for the whole of Wednesday.

SIEA general manager Andrew Daka refused to comment. He referred all enquiries to board chairman Walton Naezon, who could not be reached.

SIEA’s fuel crisis is also likely to affect provincial capitals that are already experiencing frequent power cuts in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, furious Honiara residents Wednesday demanded the sacking of the SIEA board.

Caller Joyce Manekou said she could not believe that Honiara could be without power supply for a whole day. “This is just not acceptable,” she said.

Another caller, Naesol Fagasui, said the government must remove the board members immediately. “They are not doing their job. This means they are incapable. They must go,” he said.
