Six Palauan Athletes In China For Olympics

Palau's Olympic team of six athletes is in China ready for Friday’s gala opening ceremony.

The group, led by Palau National Olympic Committee President Frank Kyota, will be the 119th country to march into the Beijing National Stadium known as the "Bird's Nest" on August 8 following the national team of Romania.

Palau's flag bearer will be wrestler Elgin Tulop Elwais, participating in his first Olympics. He also stands out as the first athlete from Palau to qualify for the Olympics on his own merit.

Sikosang Yobech will swim in the 50-meter freestyle, while Tulop and Florian Skilang will compete in freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling, respectively. Palau’s veteran Olympian Peoria Koshiba, as well as Jesse Tamangrow, will be competing in the
100-meter sprint qualifying heats.

For the first time, Palauans will be able to watch complete Olympic television coverage
due to a special arrangement with TV New Zealand and Palau National Communications Corporation.
