Kiribati Names Commission Of Inquiry Into Controversial Ship Purchase

President Anote Tong has named a Commission of Inquiry to look into the controversial purchase using government funds of the MV Mataraoi from a private local businessman for the government’s Shipping Service (KSSL).

The purchase of the ship was fully supported by former Transport Minister Patrick Tatireta, who resigned before a motion on the matter was raised in Parliament by former Finance Minister, now MP for North Tarawa, Nabuti Mwemwenikarawa.

In the deal, KSSL will buy MV Mataraoi at the cost of $500,000. But opposition MPs said it’s not worth it and questioned the transparency of the purchase.

As the controversial issue was debated in parliament, KSSL had claimed ownership of MV Mataraoi and paid  $110,000, to the owner.

Repair and maintenance work began and former Finance Minister told parliament more than $110,000 had been spent on MV Mataraoi.

The President in his reply said he will form a commission of inquiry that will scrutinize the deal, and those involved with it, including the former Minister for Transport.

The Commission includes Inatoa Tebania, a former MP and government minister and Tinian Reheir, a former Secretary for Natural Resources and MP.

The other two are senior government officials including a representative from the Attorney General’s office.

The Commission was given 30 days to report to the President.
