Horizon Lines Pull Back On Record Fuel Surcharge Hike

(Honolulu Star-Bulletin)

Horizon Lines has reduced its record 42.75 percent fuel surcharge for shipments between the U.S. mainland and Hawaii because its primary competitor didn’t match the hike, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reports.

Horizon Lines had scheduled a 4.5 percentage point fuel surcharge hike to a record 42.75 percent to go into effect on August 17. But Matson Navigation Company, which is the dominant shipper to Hawaii, didn’t match its competitor’s fuel surcharge rise.

Horizon Lines yesterday said that instead its fuel surcharge will increase 4 percentage points to 42.25 percent from 38.25 percent on Sept. 1, the newspaper said.

This is the second time this year that Horizon Lines has had to pull back on fuel surcharge hikes because Matson hasn’t met the increase.
