Palau Has Large Percentage Of Teachers With Only High School Diploma

(Palau Horizon)

Some 38 percent of Palau’s classroom teachers have only a high school diploma, Ministry of Education statistics show, the Palau Horizon reports.

According to the statistics that Raynold Mechol, Chief of Division of Research and Evaluation provided, 105 teachers have high school diplomas and teaching experience in Head Start, 98 have associate degrees or finished a two-year course in college; 49 have bachelors degrees or finished a four-year course in college, and 11 have masters degree.

The number with only high school diplomas is expected to reduce shortly, as Mechol said 19 teachers are going to complete a U.S.-college online course program by the end of this month.

Palau Community College is helping teachers attain their two-year degrees, he said.

“We are trying to improve the teaching skills of the teachers by providing them online programs and trainings,” he said. “We want to give our students quality education and we can only do that by hiring highly qualified teachers who possess skills and who are equipped with enough knowledge.”
