Four Veteran Lawmakers Can't Run For Re-Election

Four veteran members of Palau’s House of Representatives, including House Speaker Antonio Bells, have been disqualified from running this November for another term.

The four lawmakers were challenging a change in Palau’s Constitution that limits a representative’s length of service in the Congress to a maximum of three terms, or 12 years.

The Palau Election Commission rejected the appeals of Bells, Floor Leader Sabino Anastacio, and Ways and Means Chairman Mario Gulibert, who are all “termed out” in the upcoming election.

The four are expected to appeal the election commission’s rejection to the Palau Supreme Court this week.

The House is comprised of 16 delegates. Nine incumbents are running for reelection.
