Raft Of Marine Junk Sails From California To Hawaii

(Honolulu Star-Bulletin)

A sail-powered raft made of marine plastic debris – and the cabin of a small aircraft – has made port in Hawaii after 88 days at sea, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reports.

The Junk was sailed from California to Hawaii by Joel Paschal and Marcus Eriksen to publicize the problem of plastic marine debris.

“We have in 50 years turned our ocean into a plastic soup," said Eriksen, director of research and education for the Algalita Marine Research Foundation, told the newspaper. "The solution, we think, is to end the age of disposable plastic." Moore heads the foundation.

The duo made the long trip, which was initially expected to last six weeks, to bring attention to the environmental problem of disposable plastics in the ocean. The Junk is made of garbage. Discarded fishing nets stuffed with 15,000 plastic bottles serve as pontoons, and part of a Cessna 310 airplane is the cabin, the newspaper said.

The raft will be displayed in front of the Waikiki Aquarium, and will then be shipped back to California. For more on the voyage, see http://junkraft.blogspot.com/.
