Top French Official To Face The Music In F-Polynesia

French State Secretary for Overseas Yves Jégo is to visit French Polynesia this week, for a scheduled three-day visit and will hold talks with President Gaston Tong Sang, reports Oceania Flash.
Jégo is also scheduled to meet business stakeholders and union representatives to discuss the current economic situation in the French Pacific territory, where several key sectors, like tourism and pearl farming, are currently experiencing difficult times.
Oceania Flash reports that the situation in French Polynesia is also exacerbated by a recent decision from the French government to put a stop to a retirement scheme set up some 50-years ago. Until now, the scheme allowed French public servants to retire in French overseas departments and territories even if they had never been posted there during their career. The scheme, known as ‘over-pension’, in the case of French Polynesia, offered a 75 percent top-up.

Another measure announced in July by the French government, as part of its new defence White Paper, implies that, from 2011, drastic cuts would be applied to the French military personnel based in French Polynesia, with significant economic implications.
